The Use Of Race In Their Eyes Were Watching God Essays -
The Use Of Race In Their Eyes Were Watching God The Use of Race in Their Eyes Were Watching God This tale, while beautifully passing on a dark lady's quest for genuine affection, truly addresses society's capacity to be critical and abusive. Sexual orientation, race, financial security, and social delineation share similarly significant jobs in the improvement of the primary character, Janie. Hurston strikingly portrays how every capability explicitly influences the character, in spite of the fact that the racial ramifications are considerably more inconspicuous. This nuance permits the peruser to erroneously see uninterested or positive sentiments towards the novel's dark network. Hurston at first builds up the perfect insignificance of race by utilizing Janie's guiltless beloved memory. Janie agonizingly reviews Mr. Washburn, who is the dad of the family with whom they live, oppressively chuckling at her conviction of being equivalent to his white kids. She likewise was prodded by the other dark youngsters for her apparel, which is better than others' since hers is the Washburn kids' old dress. This memory is increase utilized by Hurston. It underwrites kids' acknowledgment of individuals for their activities, which is surpassingly more authentic than depicting grown-ups with similar sentiments. It shows the reliance of dark individuals on white individuals for progress. At long last, it instates the Washburn family as the portrayal of white culture; appropriately starting a negative hint towards Janie's ethnicity. Notwithstanding, these biases and their sabotaging impact portrayed inside the novel are sufficiently differentiated by Janie's tranquil mien towa rd the finish of her portrayal. Hurston astonishingly utilizes the enthusiastic reactions of the dark characters, explicitly relating to fruitful and conceivably effective undertakings of Joe, as allegories of society's preference. The underlying surprise of the dark characters to Joe's fiscal possessions and achievements deftly passes on this thought. Hurston again joins a plenty of significance to these scenes. Joe is trailed by the men from town, while going to buy the land, since they don't accept a dark man could have cash. His home's portrayal, as excessively lavish and causing the others to appear as hireling's quarters, is corresponding to the rich white men of different towns. He blames the apathetic dark men for the town's absence of improvement, depicting the ineptitude of dark men for administration. He is venerated by the town when he is available, at that point criticized when he is not, at this point ready to hear them. Regardless of being liberated from subjection, during the mid 1900's, dark indivi duals' lives are for the most part unaltered. The similitude between their work now as farmhands and officially as slaves is a functioning exemplification of this hypothesis. The main fruitful dark man is Joe. The other dark characters either are tenant farmers or are modestly utilized. This clarifies the hatred the two men on the yard have for Joe, which is a similar disdain that they would have for a white man. Dark men only occasionally had the chance, however more significantly the monetary capacity, to claim property. This makes well off and effective dark men very scant. White men possessed for all intents and purposes everything. Consequently, Joe's sum similarly speaks to the overwhelming white man and the amazingly impossible dark man's prosperity. Mrs. Turner, while sharing Janie's blended racial foundation, talks unyieldingly against blacks. She insultingly and fruitlessly proposes that Janie wed a lighter cleaned man than Tea Cake. The duality of Mrs. Turner's point of view is significant. Her perspectives misuse abusive white opinions, while all the while communicating the impact subjugation and proceeded with persecution has on the dark network. She infers that dark individuals merit bad form. Not utilizing a white character to show these mentalities permits Hurston greater industriousness in her demeanor. Endeavoring to clean the yard after the tropical storm, Tea Cake is drawn closer by two white men. His underlying response is to run before they see him, which he doesn't do. The men call him by an inappropriate name and force him into covering the dead. This happens inside the passionate and grievous scene of misfortune and demolition, making the influence applied by the white men not entirely obvious. They convey weapons, an image of intensity, and demand that no final resting place be squandered on the body of a dark individual and that no white individual be dumped in a grave. The worth society puts on a dark people life is plainly made here. In the

Everyones experience with addiction is unique. This article is intended to encourage an understanding of people with addiction, not to represent or stigmatize any individual or groups. Feeling Apart and Isolated Imagine, for a moment, that youve never really felt comfortable with who you are. It could be because you feel like youve failed at everything youve tried, or because you were never satisfied with the level of success you did achieve. It could be because youve had thoughts and emotions that make you feel different from other people, particularly if you feel that you arent as good or as lovable as others. Or perhaps you were actually told, or shown, that you were no good, worthless, or that you existed just to meet other peopleâs needs. None of the things that the people around you enjoy feel good to you, and the experiences that bring others satisfaction are hollow and unsatisfying for you. Getting Hooked Then imagine that you have an experienceâ"you drink, take a drug, win a bet or a game, have a sexual experience, overeat, make a large impulse purchaseâ"and suddenly, everything feels great. You feel as if success is easy and right for you, that perhaps others donât understand, but now it feels good to be alive. There is finally something you can depend on to be OK. It might be easy to get what feels good: for a person with a food addiction, a quick trip to the corner store and a few dollars can replenish your supply of chips and chocolate. For a person with an addiction to heroin, maintaining a habit can cost a lot of money, entail significant risks, and involve interactions with people you canât trust. But compared to the emptiness of what you felt before, investing in the chance that you could again feel good about yourself and about being alive is what matters. Experiencing Consequences Sure, those around you dont understand why youre doing what you are doing. But this just makes you want to spend time with people who do understand, whose addictions make them feel exactly the way you do. You donât even need to talk about it with themâ"between you, there is already an understanding. With them, you donât feel like an outsider, but like a member of a secret club. There is a steep price to pay for addiction. You may put on or lose weight, experience health problems, lose a lot of money, and destroy relationships. But your reasoning may be that nothing made you feel happy in the past anyway, and, at least for a short time, your addiction does. The more people criticize you, the more you want to seek comfort in that good feeling you get from your addiction. The more others lecture you about what you should be doing with your life, the more convinced you are that they donât know what they are talking about. Sure, you wish what they were saying was true, but underneath, you know that a normal life was never for you. Except you long for a normal life. You wish that you could take satisfaction in the things that seem to make other people happy, such as graduation, a career, and a family. But to get those things, or to experience them the way you want to, you would have to believe in yourself and that self-belief has always eluded you. Wanting to Recover, But Feeling Stuck Most people with addiction struggle with a double life. You try to keep your addiction hidden from most people, most of the time, even when it is quite obvious to those around you. You have a hard time admitting to yourself that you are a person with addiction because no matter how fleeting, it gives you that brief moment when everything feels okay. You want to free yourself from your addiction and not end up back where you started, with all the losses you have built up while you have been struggling. Recovery is possible for every person with addiction. But facing the problems that caused the addiction in the first place is scary. Its difficult to cope with the deep dissatisfaction with your life and to take responsibility for how your behavior affects other people. It means learning how to experience a gentler sense of pleasure in the small things in life and coping with the many challenges and imperfections of life, without retreating back into your addiction. Which means accepting being human, just like everyone else. 10 Things to Stop Doing if You Love an Addict

Communication Technology And Its Effects On Society
What form of communication technology is forcing people to engage with each other in less face to face situations? According to CNN in August of 2012, ââ¬Å"The number of text messages sent monthly in the U.S. exploded from 14 billion in 2000 to 188 billion in 2010â⬠. Texting with the use of technology is what started fewer phone calls that some people still remember doing. Text messaging is ruining us in multiple ways, loss in entertainment, less social activity and loss of interpersonal skills. The point at hand is due to the use of technology, people are losing the ability to be able to communicate effectively in face to face situations thanks to the convenience of sending a text message. When I was younger entertainment came at the expense of my imagination. The issue these days is that kids are glued to the phone for social media, texting, or for some that still send emails. Exercising the mind is something everyone does whether they know it or not, but what is the real problem. Our generation now will paint you a different view on their perspective of conversation, compared to my generation. As of today technology has taken over our lives and will continue to do so if we do not put a stop to the excessive use of smartphones when people are standing in front of us. Commanding Heights The Battle of the World Economy Movie Review
Essays on Commanding Heights: The Battle of the World Economy Movie Review The paper "Commanding Heights: The Battle of the World Economy" is an excellent example of a movie review on social science. In episode three (The New Rules of the Game) of the documentary ââ¬ËCommanding Heightsââ¬â¢, globalization emerges as the central force re-writing the new rules of the global economy. Scholars differ on the definition of the term; however, from general perspective globalization refers to international integration or interdependence between nations around the globe via mutual trade, knowledge and cultural exchange. Globalization continues to transform the globe both on positive and negative fronts; hence, the differences in opinion between those for and against its role in transforming the global economy. Proponents are of the opinion that globalization paved way for neoliberalism, which lobbies for privatization, deregulation aimed at encouraging free trade between nations across the globe. Exponential growth in the global economy remains a positive highlight of globalization. Moreover, other sectors benefit from this phenomenon such as the labor rights movement; whereby, benefits aimed at improving the lives of workers have been made. North America Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) was the prototype opening up global trade between the U.S.A, Canada, and Mexico.Conversely, those against argue that the increase in global terrorism is a product of globalization. The September 11 attack on U.S.A tore at peopleââ¬â¢s confidence in globalization casting doubt on its role in influencing the global scene positively. Moreover, it is unclear whether the neoliberal ideology, a by-product of globalization further impedes the freedom of other nations by propagating cultural and economic imperialis m. Developed nations, which have stronger economies, dominate the global market bulldozing their less privileged counterparts.

This section of the paper will be an in-depth analysis of the key details of the trial as well as look at the verdict and appeals if any. The trial, which lasted for a period of six and one-half weeks having begun on 20 January 2004, consisted of a jury of four men and about eight women who were responsible for convicting Martha Stewar t for the charges made against her. During the trial, Martha Stewart was represented by one experienced defense attorney by the name Robert Morvillo. The lead prosecutor of the case was Attorney Karen Patton who was then, the head of the criminal division. In addition to these, were the witnesses of the case who included, Mariana Pasternak, Faneuil, and Armstrong (Kellman, 2004, p.1). These witnesses testified against Stewart and her financial consultant Bacanovic. One of the witnesses, Faneuil claimed that Bacanovic had on several occasions, demanded him to cover up the whole issue of the sale of shares. In the first place, Martha was accused of making statements that were false, to the federal government among other charges of justice obstruction. Secondly, Martha Stewart was also charged with other cases of fraud including those of trade securities. In the trial, the prosecutors of the case brought to the attention of the court that Martha Stewart did not cooperate in the case an d instead barred the investigation of the government, specifically in her firm ImClone Systems. This business, which, had been founded and managed by Samuel Waksal, dealt with the production of drugs. Among its major drugs was Erbitux, a drug used to treat cancer yet the Food and Drug Administration was not to approve it (Kellman, 2004, p.1). This meant collapse of the business since this company entirely relied on this drug. As such, Waksal and Martha Stewart decided to sell their shares while lying to the government agents. The court noted that the sale of the shares by the two parties was a decision by both since it was realized that the two had communicated before the sale.Advertising Looking for term paper on business economics? Despite all the allegations, Stewart informed the court that she purported to sell her shares when she realized that the stocks of Waksal were plunging. She noted, ââ¬Å"Isnââ¬â¢t it nice to have brokers who tell you those things?â⬠(Kellman, 2004, p.1). Final charges and the verdict As mentioned earlier, Martha Stewart was convicted alongside Peter Bacanovic who was her financial consultant. The judge during this trial was Miriam Goldman who after listening to the hearings of the case made a ruling in which Martha Stewart was sentenced to five months in prison and another five months in home detention. In addition to this, Stewart was fined thirty thousand dollars and a further supervised release of nineteen months after her confinement. After this ruling, Stewart decided to appeal, and was released on bail pending the appeal. Nevertheles s, Stewart decided to proceed with her prion sentence in which she served in prison for nineteen months. Her service was in the Alderson Federal Prison Camp, which is located in West Virginia although she had denied the prison given its remoteness, which made it difficult for her mother to visit (Meier, 2004, p.1). However, the U.S Department of Justice denied her claims saying that other prisons would make it easier for the media to have access to her. The verdict of the judge came about three months after the trial had begun following an investigation that had ran for a period of two years. While Stewart was convicted with the aforementioned charges, Bacanovic was only convicted with one charge, that of making a false statement. Nevertheless, the trial judge dismissed the charges of the securities fraud that had been made against Martha Stewart. Details of the appeal Once the ruling of the case was made, Martha Stewart through her lawyers noted that she would make an appeal on the same (Ackman, 2004, p.1). This is what she exactly said, ââ¬Å"I am obviously distressed by the juryââ¬â¢s verdict, but I continue to take comfort in knowing that I have the confidence and enduring support of my family and friends. I will appeal the verdict and continue to fight to clear my name. I believe in the fairness of the judicial system and remain confident that I will ultimately prevailâ⬠(Ackman, 2004, p.1). After saying this, Martha did not have any additional comments to make in the court. A legal advisor of the Clinton White House known as Walter Dellinger took upon the appeals of Martha Stewart. Walter Dellinger was an appellate expert as well as a former solicitor general. In this specific case, Walter took over from the leader of the defense team Bob Morvillo, to precede the case to the next stage. When Martha Stewart first made her appeal, it was rejected by the U.S Court of Appeals.Advertising We will write a custom term paper sample on The Martha St ewart Trial specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More They did the same in the second circuit of her appeal. In the appeal, Martha Stewart claimed that she had been a victim of a trial that was unfair. Her lawyers emphasized the fact that the trial was ââ¬Ëfundamentally unfairââ¬â¢ arguing that the prosecutors had wrongly accused Martha Stewart of insider trading (Schwartz, 2004, p.1). The appeals of Martha Stewart were brief and concise, made public and indicated that the jury ought to have understood the difference between deceiving and insider trading of securities. The leader of the appeal, Dellinger, requested that a new trial be done on the same case by forwarding his request to the Department of Probation. In fact, Dellinger argued that the trial judge was not in any case reasonable and the court ought to hold any sentence pending the appeal. Despite the fact that most of the statements made by the witnesses of the case were allow ed to stand, Dellinger still decided to move ahead and dispute the facts alleged against his client. Following the appeals, Martha Stewart was released in March 2005 since she had won in the appeals (Schwartz, 2004, p.1). It is important to note that the conviction of Martha Stewart had significant impact on her image, given the fact that she had much publicity through her career as a TV personality and an author of famous magazines. Profile of Serial Killer John Eric Armstrong
Profile of Serial Killer John Eric Armstrong John Eric Armstrong was a 300-pound, former U.S. Navy sailor, who was known for being mild-mannered and who had an innocent child-like look, so much so, that while in the Navy he was nicknamed Opie by his mates. Armstrong joined the Navy in 1992 when he was 18 years old. He served seven years on the Nimitz aircraft carrier. During his time in the Navy he received four promotions and earned two Good Conduct medals. When he left the Navy in 1999, he and his wife moved to Deaborn Heights, a working-class neighborhood in Michigan. He got a job with Target retail stores and later with the Detroit Metropolitan Airport refueling airplanes.à Those who lived around the Armstrongs thought of John as a good neighbor and stand-up guy who was a committed husband and devoted father to his 14-month-old son.à A Call to the Police Detroit investigators became suspicious of Armstrong after he contacted them in regards to a body he saw floating in the Rouge River. He told the police that he was walking on the bridge when suddenly he felt ill and leaned over the bridge and saw the body. Police pulled the body of 39-year-old Wendy Joran out of the river. Joran was known to the police. She was an active drug user and prostitute. Investigators noted that Jorans murder was very similar to a string of murders of prostitutes which had recently occurred. Police Suspect Armstrong Investigators looking into the possibility that a serial killer was murdering local prostitutes found Armstrongs walking along the bridge story to be highly suspicious. They decided to place him under surveillance. Once they had Jorans DNA and other evidence collected they went to Armstrongs home and requested a blood sample and asked if they could collect fibers from around his home and from the inside of his car. Armstrong agreed and allowed the investigative inside his home. Through DNA testing the investigators were able to link Armstrong to one of the murdered prostitutes, but they wanted to wait to get a full report from the testing lab before they arrested Armstrong. Then on April 10, three more bodies were discovered is various stages of decomposition.à Investigators set up a task force and began interviewing local prostitutes. Three of the prostitutes admitted to having sex with Armstrong. All three of women described his baby-like face and à the 1998 black Jeep Wrangler that Armstrong drove. They also said that after having sex, Armstrong appeared to go crazy and tried to strangle them. Arrest On April 12, police arrested Armstrong for the murder of Wendy Joran. It did not take long for Armstrong to crack under pressure. He told investigators that he hated prostitutes and that he was 17 years old when he first committed murder. He also confessed to killing other prostitutes in the area and to 12 other murders that he committed around the world while he was in the Navy. The list included murders in Hawaii, Hong Kong, Thailand, and Singapore, and Israel.à He later recanted his confessions Trial and Conviction In March 2001, Armstrong went on trial for the murder of Wendy Joran. His lawyers tried to prove that Armstrong was insane, but their efforts were unsuccessful. On July 4, 2001, Armstrong bargained down to a plea of second-degree murder, and as a result he was sentenced to 31 years of life in prison for the murders of Brown, Felt and Johnson. All together he received two life sentences plus 31 years as punishment for his killings. Armstrong later said that he began killing prostitutes after his high school girlfriend broke up with him for another man, who he claimed seduced her with gifts. He viewed it as a form of prostitution and began his killing spree as an act of revenge. FBI Launches an International Investigation The FBI continued to try to connect Armstrong to similar unsolved murders in countries such as Thailand, and all other places Armstrong was based while in the Navy.

How To Give Advice in Spanish
How To Give Advice in Spanish There are at least four ways you can offer advice in Spanish, depending partly on how direct you wish to be. Statements of advice can be in the form of a command, in the form of telling a person what he or she is obligated to do, as a statement of advice followed by the subjunctive mood, and as a n impersonal statement followed by the subjunctive mood. All four methods have parallels in English. Giving Advice Using Commands Commands may go beyond the point of being advisory, depending on the context, tone of voice and whether your command is direct or indirect. In context, commands (also known asà the imperative mood) such as these can be understood as either advice or a demand: Habla tà º a la policà a, y diles que tu vecina est loca. (Talk to the police and tell them your neighbor is crazy.)Compre el producto, no el proveedor. (Buy the product, not the provider.)No salgas ahora. (Dont leave now.) The future tense can substitute for the imperative in making directing commands, as it can in English. But such commands are extremely forceful and thus would not usually be understood as advisory. à ¡Comers todo el almuerzo! (You will eat all of your lunch!)à ¡Saldr ahora mismo! (You will leave right now!) Giving Advice by Expressing Obligation Like direct commands, whether statements of obligation (such as You should do this in English) are understood as advice - or potentially as rude - depends on context, including the tone of voice. The common ways of expressing obligation are the uses of tener que infinitive and deber infinitive. When giving advice, you can soften the tone by using a conditional form of deber: Deberà as estudiar un poco acerca de las opciones. (You ought to study a little bit about the choices.)No deberà as escoger productos lcteos que son altos en grasas. (You shouldnt choose dairy products that are high in fat.)Deberà an ustedes ser ms positivos. (You should be more positive.) Using Verbs of Advice With the Subjunctive Because giving advice is often a way of expressing a wish or a desire - or certainly of referring to an event that may or may not occur - the subjunctive mood is used after the verb of advice. Common verbs of advice and possible translations include: aconsejar: to advisesugerir: to suggestproponer: to propose, to put forward (an idea) These verbs should not be confused with verbs such as notificar and informar, which can be translated as advise, but only in the sense of to inform. Some examples: Te aconsejo que me olvides. (I suggest that you forget me.)Te aconsejo que te cases en tu propio paà s. (I advise you to get married in your own country.)Sugiero que se pueda desactivar el foro. (I suggest that you deactivate the forum.)Le sugerimos que visite nuestro sitio regularmente. (We suggest that you visit our site regularly.)Sugiero que te comuniques con el centro meteorolà ³gico de tu ciudad. (I suggest you communicate with your citys weather center.)Te propongo que escribas un articulo con lo que sabes de este seà ±or. (I suggest you write an article based on what you know about this gentleman.)Te proponemos que dediques 3 minutitos a contestar este cuestionario. (We ask you to spend just three short minutes answering this questionnaire.) Using Impersonal Statements as Advice An even less direct way of giving advice is to use impersonal statements, typically followed by the subjunctive. Examples of impersonal statements used in advice include es importante (it is important) and es necesario (it is necessary); like verbs of advice, they are followed by a verb in the subjunctive mood. And as in the fourth example below, you can make statements of how you would react as a way of advising. Es importante que participes en clase. (It is important that you participate in class.)Creemos que es necesario que tenga un coche fiable. (We believe it is important that you have a reliable car.)Serà a provechoso si pudià ©ramos examinar ese problema. (It would be helpful if we could examine that problem.)Me gustarà a si me escribes de vez en cuando. (It would please me if you write to me once in a while.) Key Takeaways The most direct way of giving advice is to use the imperative mood or the future tense, although such ways of giving advice can come across as too forceful to be considered advice.Verbs of advice are typically followed by que and a verb in the subjunctive mood.Impersonal statements followed by a verb in the subjunctive mood can be used to give advice indirectly.

Business and Marketing strategy (case Study) Essay
Business and Marketing strategy (case Study) - Essay Example Beverage industry is one of the most dynamic industries that are applying this concept to great effect (Boone et al. 2009, p. 194). Beverage industry is broadly classified as alcoholic and non alcoholic. In both categories there are exemplifications of global marketing. Worldââ¬â¢s non alcoholic industry is grappled with tough competition by the two large players Coca Cola and PepsiCo. Both the giants are expanding their value horizon across different countries. Though both companies are equally successful, Coca Cola leads the global market, with PepsiCo being on its tail continuously (Cardello 2011). Ethics and Business Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words
Ethics and Business - Research Paper Example One field in which ethics are applied is in the field of business spanning from accounting to auditing. Ethics and professionalism are currently applied in various organizational settings and in many emerging issues of the business world. It is necessary for businesses to be governed by ethics, but this is a two way traffic affair since accounting and auditing standards also impact on ethics. Apart from these two business tenets, emerging issues and the business environment also have an effect on the ethics of business operations (Houghton, 2005). Business ethics refers to the moral rules and codes of conduct that govern business procedures. These rules also govern the manner in which business managers make decisions concerning organizational matters. Ethics and regulations in the business are related because ethics govern the manner in which business regulations are done. Therefore, regulations in business impact on ethics because when establishing business ethics of a particular company, the management puts into consideration the regulations that may arise in the course of business procedures. For example, the day to day running of the business enterprise requires that managers and supervisors regulate the functions of different workers and the manner in which the organization conducts business with other companies

Womens Rights :: essays research papers
Womenââ¬â¢s Rights For many years, women have been unable to participate and have often been discriminated against in many situations and circumstances such as not being able to vote, not getting equal pay for equal work, couldnââ¬â¢t own property, and had no educational or career opportunities. Women were under the control of a man throughout their entire life. A man virtually owned his wife as he did his material possessions. Their fathers controlled them until they got married, at which point their husbands controlled them. Women basically had no rights at this time in history. à à à à à For many years, women in the United States felt they deserved the right to vote, but they were largely ignored. Voting was considered to be a manââ¬â¢s right and was not to be violated. Working conditions for women were very unfair as well. They would work for as long or maybe even longer as men would and get paid less money for it. Another disadvantage is that women were unable to get any educational or career opportunities for themselves. Many of the womenââ¬â¢s jobs included raising children, prepare food, make clothing, and take care of the things around the house. Their days were really full and often very tiring. The labor work was mainly what the women were in charge of. A womenââ¬â¢s life was very rough at this time. They fought for equality and didnââ¬â¢t receive it until years later. à à à à à When women started to fight for equality many things began to change. In August of 1920, the Tennessee legislature ratified the 19th amendment, and it became a law. Women had the vote! Women these days hold jobs that they werenââ¬â¢t allowed to or didnââ¬â¢t have during the Progressive Era. For example, doctors. In 1890, women constituted about 5 percent of the total doctors in the United States and during the 1980s the proportion was about 17 percent.

Alberti on Renaissance Painting and Technique
This essay will deal with the technical and metaphysical aspects of Albertiââ¬â¢s famous 1435 piece, On Painting, specifically, the paragraphs in Book II 25-34. What is significant about this selection is that it summarizes many of the technical and metaphysical principles that have come to define the renaissance, especially the dominance of Plato and the rule of Form.Hence, this selection is not merely a matter of painting technique, but a summary of the basic ontology of Renaissance thinking as it pertains to painting and sculpture, as Alberti considers these as ââ¬Å"cognate arts.â⬠The citations will be based on the paragraph number rather than the page. The professed aim of this section is to justify the honor and virtue of the painter as an artist. But of course, it is far more than that. Alberti depicts the painter almost as a sorcerer or sorts, someone who can make what is not present, present. The notion of re-creation, or even co-creation is a central element of the scientific revolution that the Renaissance both foreshadowed and participated in.For Alberti, the painter can, in a sense, bring the dead back to life (25). The painter does, on a regular basis, what the alchemist tries and struggles to bring about, to have a dominance over creation, to master it and force it to bend to the artistsââ¬â¢ will. This is the real connection between Albertiââ¬â¢s work here and the scientific and alchemical ideology of the Renaissance (Caron, 1961 35-37).Alberti continues to contrast the painterââ¬â¢s art to the alchemists, holding that a painted jewel or piece of gold, because it is artistically rendered, is actually worth more than the actual stone or previous metal. This is a challenge to alchemy, having been reborn during the Renaissance. Alchemy sought to manipulate matter for the sake of wealth and power. But the painter does this on a regular basis, and is financially more successful than the alchemist (25).Therefore, painting is manâ⬠â¢s way of re-creating the already extant creation of God. It is the application of the human mind to what already exists, and in a sense, the artist becomes the creator, or more accurately, the architect of creation using what already exists to create something new, to take creation and raise it to a new level of understanding. If one can understand creation, then one can control it: the reward is money and glory (26, explicitly mentioned in 28 as the foal of the artist, which of course, is the same goal as the alchemist).Alberti makes the intriguing claim that the arts of painting and sculpture developed at the same time as religion (27). He does not elaborate on this claim, but the remainder of the selection under examination here might give us come clues. In paragraph 30, three specific steps of artistic technique and developed, though ultimately, only the first two really matter, that of circumspection and that of composition. The third, color or the ââ¬Å"reception of lightâ ⬠is not treated in this selection. But this is not merely a technical manual, but a strong summary of the ontology of Alberti and the Florentine Renaissance. This ontology might help us answer the question that Alberti poses concerning the identical development of religion and painting.Specifically, there are three steps in re-creating the object under examination. First, and the most important, is the concept of circumspection. This is the most important because it is a reference to Platoââ¬â¢s Forms, or the ultimate grounding of all objects that exist. A Form is the true being of an object, outside of space and time, which is the ââ¬Å"essenceâ⬠of the object to be painted. It is this Form that the painter must understand, however incompletely, though the mind of the artist, since a Form cannot be seen with the senses. Only the intellect can apprehend the Form. In a more technical sense, the Form that can be perceived by the artist is the ââ¬Å"outlineâ⬠of the object. One first needs to eliminate what is specific about an object and reach its form.

Social Issues Involving Gender And Race - 877 Words
In the field of Sociology, when it comes to the subject of race and gender there are two sociologist that come to mind. Charlotte P. Gilman was an American feminist, sociologist, and novelist. W.E.B Du Bois was an American sociologist, civil rights activist, and author. I will be comparing and contrasting Charlotte Perkins Gilman and W.E.B. Du Bois based on their theories. Social issues involving gender and race are still relevant in modern times. The power struggle women and people of color faced during their time is a conflict that still exists in modern society. There are some similarities in how Gilman and Du Bois theories ââ¬â they both apply Karl Marxââ¬â¢s conflict theory. Gilman stated that the traditional family structure is exploitable; this is similar to how Marx discussed the exploitation of labor and the workers. Marx saw conflict between the bourgeoisie, who are the owners of production, and proletariat, the workers. In the case of Gilman, she described a conflic t existing between men and women. In the case of Du Bois, he described a conflict existing within race and class ââ¬â to him the problems Blacks faced in America were created by the ââ¬Ëwhite manââ¬â¢ and Blacks did not have to prove themselves to whites. Like Marx, Gilman believes that the basic driving force of humanity is economic production (Allan 2013:190-192).
